With the trade deadline getting closer as each day passes, only 13 days away, I decided to actually post something related to all the Bruins trade rumors out there. I didn’t want to speculate too much about these trade rumors, especially when the Bruins are playing how they have been this season, because I don't believe in breaking up a good thing. Yes, adding some depth via draft picks is never a bad idea, but moving one of your young talents for a “rent-a-player” is bad management in my eyes. And don’t explain to me how the bruins have a chance at looking up a high-profile player for a few years because that’s bullshit. How would the B’s do that? At the end of the season, the Bruins have Phil Kessel, David Krejci and Matt Hunwick all up for new contracts and by what the trending in the league says, these guys will be offered 3-to-5 year deals with hefty pay increases. On top of this six other key parts of the team will be up for new contracts after the 2009/2010 season meaning the Bruins will likely try to lock up new deals with them between now and then. So where is all this cap space to sign this high-profile player we will get before the 4th long-term? Exactly, there really isn’t much. So why give up the likes of Sobotka or St. Pierre for a “rent-a-player”?
I think people need to slow down and realize the Bruins are playing some of the best hockey in Boston in recent memories and can hands down outplay any team in the league (meaning they haven’t been just lucky). The team has become a family and yeah they might need some help on the left-wing but it’s bad enough to where the B’s desperately need to make a move. The team is solid and when people sit there and say they need this guy or that guy, that’s just being greedy and honestly under appreciating the whole season before the deadline. I guess to me it just doesn’t make sense to hear people pleading that we need to sign someone when we have gone 40-10-8 with the core group we have.
In the end, some depth would be nice. But unlike year’s past, I wouldn’t be upset if the Bruins decided to stay quiet before March 4th and hold on to their future. I mean a Cup would be nice this year but come on, we are technically still in a “rebuilding” process and look what we have already accomplished.
But just for the fun of it, what do you think the bruins will do before the trade deadline? Will the Black & Gold decide to stay quiet or will they pursue outside help (and if so who)?
